Philtek Electronics Ltd. in Richmond has electrified digital signal processing (DSP). The company, with help from the provincially-funded Technology BC program, has applied DSP technology to create a new generation of power supplies.

Working with the University of Victoria’s Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Philtek has developed a new generation of power supplies that use digital signal processing to control three-phase power factor correction and output voltage regulation. DSP enables the AC power factor corrector to deliver an uninterruptible power source with an excellent signal. This new technology will mean faster and more efficient operation for clients who have enormous power requirements and need large amounts of electricity. These include electric utility operations, telecommunications companies, pulp and paper operations and oil and gas refineries.

This new generation of DSP products will enhance Philtek’s line of AC to DC converters, battery chargers, frequency converters, uninterruptible power supplies and custom designed power supplies.

Philtek’s research has given two students at UVic full-time work and increased Philtek’s market share. The company is now gearing up to distribute the power supplies internationally and are estimating that 75 percent of the market will be in exports. This means more jobs and higher revenues for this successful, highly charged little company.
